Charcoal Workshops

An Introduction to the Subtlety & Drama of Charcoal

Many people think charcoal is just for sketching, planning or perhaps a few last minute details.

Of course charcoal is useful for these things, but nowadays little 'final' work is produced using this medium. And many might argue that work in charcoal is not painting.

Well it might not be painting..... but it sure can produce wonderful art and personally, I think it's greatly underrated.

Charcoal can be used very effectively on its own and can be fabulously combined with pastels, inks and paint into great work.

What people have said about this workshop

Freda’s Charcoal Workshop was the perfect combination of instructive and fun, and she was so encouraging. I came away with a fresh appreciation of the wide range of creative possibilities in just some good quality paper and a couple of types of charcoal.” DP

I found it incredibly helpful to be making some progress, in a medium I do not regularly use. With Freda’s guidance and encouragement, I was really pleased with the result. We managed to get a comprehensive view of types of charcoal, paper to use, and various techniques, with plenty of experimental work before doing an actual drawing.” YH

The 2 1/2 hour workshop aims to introduce the variety of mark and tone that can be achieved using both willow and compressed charcoal.

It is designed round landscape work - though of course charcoal is a wonderful medium for portraits etc.

All materials are provided, but participants are asked to:

  • bring along hard or soft copies of landscape images
  • dress for dirty work - as charcoal can get very messy!

It is not suitable for children, but might be useful for GCSE or A level students.
